Regarding the Red Garter it's sad news to learn one of the last remaining dive bars on the Westside has been destroyed by developers.
But it's never too late to have a look inside because a scene was shot there for Will Farrell's "Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgandy." When Farrell crashes and burns and becomes a real mess he turns up at the Red Garter which is where he finally snaps out of it and magically reunites with his pals from the evening news. In this scene you see pretty much the entire Red Garter -- a pool table, a trophy case in the corner and the bar. It was a small place and had been there forever -- nothing special other than a nice cozy working class bar frozen in time. As I recall we brought very little set dressing in and shot it pretty much as it was.

Since we're on the subject of dive bars and movies, there's a tradition going back many decades for each major studio to have at least one or more working class bar as close as possible to a studio gate. You'll find the Sony bar across from the south gate. The infamous 6:00am bar, the Joker was just a hundred feet from the main Paramount gate. I was always told there was a lot phone running directly to the Joker I guess so you could round up your guys who were pretending to be up high on a stage working, but instead were downing a cold one at the Joker. The Joker was torn down for a Paramount expansion years ago. These bars played a key role in LA working class culture. It would be nice to preserve at least one of them.
